Charge from the Provost and Chief Academic Officer

 M E M O R A N D U M

TO:             TLT Committee

FROM:        Richard A. English, Ph.D

Interim Provost and Chief Academic Officer

DATE:          February 11, 2004

SUBJECT:   Teaching, Learning and Technology Committee

I am writing to ask you to serve as a member of an advisory committee that I have created to facilitate the work of the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Assessment (CETLA). The Teaching, Learning and Technology Committee (TLT) will work with the Office of the Provost and CETLA to ensure excellence in teaching and learning and enhance technology-based undergraduate and graduate education at Howard University.  The Committee’s primary charge will be to formulate a strategic plan to improve technology-based teaching and learning and advise the Office of the Provost about instructional technology and programmatic issues that affect technology-based teaching and learning.

As a member of the TLT Committee, you will perform an important service for the University.  Following the successful model developed by the TLT Group (an affiliate of the American Association for Higher Education), Howard’s TLT Committee will consist of representatives from the faculty, student body, libraries, Information Systems and Services (ISAS), administration, staff, and the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Assessment (CETLA).  (To learn more about the mission of TLT committees, see “Definition & Characteristics of a TLT Roundtable at www.tltgroup.org/TLTR/Characteristics.htm).  If we are to compete in the contemporary higher education arena, we must ensure that faculty members and other instructional personnel have available to them modern, integrated and operational instructional technology and services that can support their disciplinary expertise.

Dr. Teresa Redd, Director of CETLA, will chair the Committee.  She will convene the initial Committee meeting to review the Committee’s charge and begin addressing pressing issues related to instructional technology.  I am asking the Committee to develop a strategic plan as soon as possible.

I hope you will contribute your time and expertise to this important task.  Please contact Dr. Vasant Telang, Associate Provost, by February 20, 2004 to confirm your willingness to serve on the Committee.  You may reach him at 202-806-2550 or vtelang@howard.edu if you have questions.

Thank you in advance for your willingness to serve.
